Dorothea has been dancing most of her life, beginning with ballet
at age 7. In 2006 she found new joy and freedom in belly dance. While
originally drawn to the beauty, power and gracefulness of the dance,
Dorothea soon developed a broader appreciation for the social and
cultural aspects that surround this ancient art form. She strives
to present the dance in a manner that is faithful to authentic Middle
Eastern traditions.
Dorothea began studying (and continues to study) belly dance with
Jamileh of Portland, Maine. She has expanded her appreciation and
understanding by attending workshops with the Egyptian drummer and
dancer, Karim Nagi, and studying Middle Eastern rhythms with percussionist
Eric Laperna. Dorothea has performed with the celebrated duo Okbari
as well as the Alhan Arabic Music Ensemble in Portland, Maine. She
is currently teaching workshops and weekly classes in Buxton, Maine.
Dorothea is delighted by every opportunity to share the tradition
of belly dance. |
